Chapter 6
The Psycho Wife’s Final Revenge
Chapter 6: The Eviction Notice
Ten days. It had only been ten days since Evelyn Vance walked out the front door, yet the sprawling suburban estate felt like it had aged ten years.
The initial thrill of Evelyn’s absence had rapidly decayed into a toxic, stressful mess. The house, usually pristine thanks to the expensive cleaning service Evelyn managed, was beginning to smell of stale trash and damp towels. Chloe had absolutely refused to do laundry, claiming the chemicals in the detergent gave her a rash. Maya had spent the last three days crying and screaming because all her gymnastics leotards were dirty, and Leo was spending 16 hours a day playing video games in his room since his two-week suspension from school began.
Richard was operating on three hours of sleep a night. He had managed to avoid a total mutiny at his office by taking out a high-interest payday loan against his personal car to cover half of the payroll, but his employees were actively looking for other jobs. The walls were closing in, and the illusion of his perfect, cool new life with Chloe was shattering piece by piece.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when the mail arrived.
Richard trudged down the long driveway, his eyes heavy with exhaustion. He pulled a stack of envelopes from the brass mailbox. Most of it was junk, but near the bottom was a thick, registered letter from First National Bank—the holder of the home’s mortgage.
Richard tore open the envelope as he walked back into the kitchen. Chloe was sitting at the island, wearing a designer tracksuit, scrolling through an online luxury boutique on her iPad. A half-eaten bowl of cereal sat next to her, the milk curdling slightly in the afternoon heat.
"Hey babe," Chloe didn't look up. "Can we order sushi tonight? I’m craving the spicy tuna from Nobu."
Richard didn't answer. His eyes were locked on the bold black text of the bank letter.
NOTICE OF DEFAULT AND INTENT TO FORECLOSE.
Dear Mr. Vance,
This letter serves as formal notification that your mortgage payment of $15,400.00, due on the 1st of the month, has been returned due to insufficient funds. Furthermore, the automatic withdrawal authorization linked to the Evelyn Vance Irrevocable Trust has been permanently terminated by the account holder. You now have 15 days to remit the past due balance, plus a $750 late penalty, or foreclosure proceedings will commence immediately on the property.
Richard’s legs felt weak. He slumped into one of the velvet barstools. Fifteen thousand dollars. He barely had enough money to buy the groceries Chloe demanded, let alone cover a mansion’s mortgage. Evelyn hadn't just stopped paying for the extras; she had pulled the very roof off from over their heads.
"Earth to Richard," Chloe said, waving a manicured hand in front of his face. "Nobu? Yes or no? If you don't want to go pick it up, we can just get it delivered, but it’s like a forty-dollar delivery fee."
Richard looked up at her, really looking at her. She was beautiful, yes. But she was a parasite. A luxury he could only afford when his wife was quietly footing the bill for reality.
"Chloe," Richard began, his voice hoarse. He cleared his throat. "We... we have a slight cash flow issue right now. Evelyn is being extremely vindictive. She’s frozen my corporate accounts and canceled the automatic payments on the house."
Chloe finally looked up from her iPad, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Okay? So just use your other accounts. You’re the CEO. Just transfer some money."
"I can't," Richard snapped, his frustration bleeding through his carefully maintained calm. "All my liquid assets are tied up in the business, which Evelyn is currently holding hostage. I need to pay the mortgage by next week, or the bank is going to take the house."
Chloe stared at him, her lips parting slightly. "Take the house? Are you joking?"
"No, I am not joking," Richard rubbed his temples, a headache throbbing fiercely behind his eyes. He took a deep breath, trying a different approach. "Look, Chloe. I know you have some savings. And the lease on your apartment downtown—the one you're subletting—you've been collecting rent on that. I need a temporary loan. Just $16,000 to cover the house and a few bills until I can get my lawyers to force Evelyn to release my funds."
The silence that followed was deafening. The "cool, understanding" girl persona that Chloe had weaponized against Evelyn vanished instantly. Her face hardened, her eyes turning cold and calculating.
"You want me to pay your mortgage?" Chloe asked, her voice shrill and entirely devoid of its usual breathy sweetness. "Are you out of your mind, Richard? I’m twenty-six years old! I’m not paying for a house that I don't even own! And I am certainly not paying to keep a roof over your bratty teenagers' heads!"
"Keep your voice down," Richard hissed, glancing toward the stairs. "It’s a loan. I will pay you back with interest once this divorce is settled."
"With what money?!" Chloe stood up, her chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor. "You told me you were rich! You told me Evelyn was just a nagging housewife and you were the brains behind the money! You bought me a car! You took me to Miami!"
"I am the brains! It’s my firm!" Richard shouted back, his pride wounded.
"But it’s her money!" Chloe shrieked, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "Oh my god. You're broke. You are literally a broke, middle-aged loser whose wife pays his bills."
Richard stood up, his face red with rage. "Don't you dare speak to me like that. I gave you everything!"
"You gave me everything on your wife’s credit card!" Chloe threw her iPad onto the counter. "I’m not spending a dime of my own money on this sinking ship. Figure it out yourself, Richard. And don't bother ordering Nobu. I’m going out with my friends tonight."
Chloe stormed out of the kitchen, her designer sneakers thudding heavily up the stairs.
Richard stood alone in the filthy kitchen, the eviction notice trembling in his hand. He looked at the burned stovetop, the overflowing trash can, and the empty bottles of wine on the counter. The perfect, carefree life he thought he was escaping to was a mirage. And Evelyn, the "psycho control freak," was currently sitting somewhere, watching him drown in the very ocean she had spent seventeen years keeping him out of.
He pulled out his phone, his thumb hovering over Evelyn’s contact name. He wanted to call her. He wanted to beg. But he knew, with chilling certainty, that she wouldn't answer.
The game had just begun.
