Chapter 1
The Alchemist's Vow: A Rejected Mate's Revenge
The sound of Leo’s coughing was what shattered the quiet of the alchemy lab, but it was the metallic, sickening scent of silver that made Seraphina’s blood run cold.
"Leo!" Seraphina Vance dropped the bundle of dried wolfsbane she was holding, the brittle leaves scattering across the stone floor. She rushed to the corner of the dimly lit laboratory where her younger brother lay convulsing on a small cot.
"Sera..." Leo gasped, his back arching in agony. A thick, silvery substance oozed from the corners of his pale lips. The veins along his neck were bulging, glowing with a faint, toxic luminescence beneath his skin.
"No, no, no. Not tonight. You were stable this morning!" Seraphina cried out, her hands flying over his trembling body as she desperately searched for her diagnostic vials. She grabbed a small glass dropper, placing a single drop of blue liquid against the silver foam on his mouth.
The liquid instantly hissed and turned a violent, ashen black.
Silver-Blight. The curse was accelerating.
"It burns, Sera," Leo whimpered, his fingers weakly clutching her apron. "My chest... it feels like it's tearing apart."
"I know, sweetie, I know. Look at me," Seraphina commanded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady. "Keep your eyes on me. I’m going to fix this. I am the Pack Alchemist. I won't let you die."
"You... you can't brew a cure fast enough," he choked out, his golden eyes rolling back slightly. "It's in my heart now."
He was right. Alchemy alone couldn't stop a late-stage Silver-Blight attack. There was only one thing powerful enough to neutralize the toxic magic ravaging his system: the pure, undiluted blood of an Alpha. Not just any Alpha, but her fated mate. Alpha Kaelen Thorne.
"I don't need to brew anything," Seraphina said fiercely, wiping the toxic silver from his chin with the hem of her sleeve. "Kaelen will give me his blood. We are fated. He is my mate, Leo. He won't let my brother die."
"He... he doesn't like me," Leo whispered, a tear slipping down his cheek. "He says I'm... defective."
"He’s an arrogant fool, but he is my mate," Seraphina snapped, though her heart clenched at the truth in her brother's words. Kaelen had always been cold, obsessed with strength and pedigree. But the Goddess had tied their souls together. He had to help. "Come on. Put your arm around my neck. We are going to the Moon Grove."
Seraphina hauled her fourteen-year-old brother off the cot. He was alarmingly light, his muscles wasted away by the chronic magical affliction. She braced his weight against her hip, practically carrying him as she kicked open the heavy wooden door of the laboratory.
The night air of the Crimson Vale was crisp, illuminated by the ominous, crimson glow of the Blood Moon hanging heavy in the sky. It was a night of immense magical power, a night meant for pack unity and strength.
"Stay with me, Leo," Seraphina panted, her boots crunching over the gravel path leading toward the Alpha's private estate. "Keep breathing. Just a little further."
"Sera... leave me," Leo groaned, his head lolling against her shoulder. "I'm slowing you down."
"Shut up," she hissed, tears stinging her eyes. "You are all I have left. I am not leaving you. I would burn this entire territory to the ground before I let you go."
She dragged him through the ornate iron gates of the Alpha's gardens, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The Moon Grove was a sacred sanctuary, restricted to the Alpha and the high elders, but she didn't care. She was his fated mate. She had the right.
As they approached the heavy oak doors of the sanctuary, the overwhelming scent of burning sage, crushed jasmine, and raw, crackling magic hit her senses.
"Kaelen!" Seraphina screamed, kicking the oak doors with all her might. They shuddered and groaned, swinging inward to reveal the candlelit grove. "Kaelen, I need you! It's Leo!"
Seraphina stumbled into the sanctuary, dragging her dying brother, but the words died in her throat. The sight before her made her blood freeze in her veins.
In the center of the grove, standing beneath the open skylight that bathed them in the red light of the Blood Moon, stood Alpha Kaelen Thorne. He was shirtless, his broad, scarred chest heaving, his silver-blonde hair catching the moonlight. But he was not alone.
Standing perfectly pressed against him, her hands tangled in his hair, was Vespera Vance. Seraphina’s own cousin.
Around their wrists, a glowing, ethereal ribbon of golden light was wrapping itself tight, searing into their skin. A soul-binding ritual.
"What is the meaning of this interruption?" Kaelen’s voice boomed, rich and commanding, laced with the terrifying weight of his Alpha aura. He didn't even look guilty. His ice-blue eyes fixed on Seraphina with nothing but sheer annoyance.
"What are you doing?" Seraphina breathed, her grip on Leo slipping for a second before she caught him. "Kaelen... what is this?"
Vespera turned her head, a slow, venomous smile spreading across her perfectly painted ruby lips. She smoothed her hands down Kaelen’s chest, her eyes flashing with triumphant malice. "Isn't it obvious, cousin? The Alpha is claiming his Luna."
"No," Seraphina shook her head, feeling the world tilt on its axis. "No, that's impossible. I am your fated mate, Kaelen. The Goddess chose us."
"The Goddess made a cosmic mistake," Kaelen said coldly, his voice devoid of any warmth or affection. He stepped away from Vespera, though the golden binding ribbon between them continued to pulse. "The Crimson Vale needs a Luna of impeccable pedigree. A warrior. A queen. Not a glorified potion-maker who spends her days covered in soot and smelling of bitter herbs."
Seraphina stared at the man she had loved for three years. The man she had sacrificed her time, her energy, and her magical reserves for. She had brewed his stamina potions, healed his warriors, and kept his pack thriving from the shadows, all because she believed her worth was tied to how useful she could be to him.
"I have served this pack flawlessly," Seraphina said, her voice cracking. "I have given you everything."
"You have done your job," Kaelen corrected sharply. "And you will continue to do your job. But a mate bond is a political tool, Seraphina. Vespera’s bloodline is pure. She is an elite fighter. She doesn't carry the genetic rot that plagues your immediate family."
"Genetic rot?" Seraphina gasped, looking down at Leo, who was now coughing violently, splattering black-silver blood onto the marble floor of the sanctuary. "Is that what this is about? You're discarding me because my brother is sick?"
"I am discarding you because you are weak," Kaelen sneered, taking a step closer, towering over her. "And weakness is a disease I will not allow to infect the Crimson Vale."
"Oh, Sera, don't look so pathetic," Vespera chimed in, stepping up beside Kaelen and looping her arm through his. "You must have known you were never meant to stand beside him. You belong in the dark, mixing your little cauldrons. Leave the ruling to those of us born for it."
"Shut your mouth, Vespera," Seraphina snarled, a sudden, fierce heat rising in her chest. She looked back at Kaelen, her eyes blazing. "I don't care who you sleep with. I don't care who you bind your soul to. But Leo is dying. The Silver-Blight has reached his heart. I need your blood, Kaelen. Just a vial. It's the only thing that can neutralize the poison."
Kaelen’s eyes flicked down to the boy slumped against Seraphina’s side. Leo was gasping for air, his skin taking on a terrifying, translucent gray hue.
"Please," Seraphina begged, the fight draining out of her as desperation took over. She dropped to her knees, dragging Leo down with her, clutching his shaking hand. "Please, Kaelen. You owe me this much. I saved your Beta’s life last winter. I cured the poisoned water supply. Just give me a few drops of your blood. I will relinquish the mate bond willingly. I will step aside for Vespera. Just save my brother!"
Vespera scoffed, examining her manicured nails. "Really, Kaelen, do we want his tainted blood mixed with yours? The boy is practically a corpse already."
"He is a child!" Seraphina screamed, tears finally spilling over her cheeks. "He is my brother!"
Kaelen slowly walked toward them, his heavy boots echoing in the silent grove. He stopped right in front of Seraphina, looking down at Leo with an expression of pure, clinical disgust. He didn't see a boy in pain. He saw a flawed specimen.
"An Alpha's blood is sacred," Kaelen said softly, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "It is meant to empower the strong. To heal warriors who bleed for this pack. I will not waste my vitality on a genetic dead end."
Seraphina froze. The air in her lungs vanished. "What did you just say?"
"The boy is a weak link," Kaelen stated, his eyes devoid of humanity. "His affliction is proof that your bloodline is fundamentally flawed. Letting him die is the natural order. It cleanses the pack."
"You monster," Seraphina whispered, her entire body shaking with a rage so profound it tasted like ash in her mouth. "You absolute, soulless monster."
"Watch your tone, Alchemist," Kaelen warned, his eyes flashing a dangerous, glowing gold.
"I will kill you," Seraphina hissed, leaning over her brother protectively. "If you let him die, I will spend the rest of my life figuring out how to tear your pack apart from the inside out."
Kaelen’s expression hardened into a mask of stone. "You will do no such thing. You will submit, as you always have. Because you are nothing without the Crimson Vale."
He raised his hand, the Alpha aura rolling off him in suffocating, crushing waves. Seraphina felt the invisible weight press down on her chest, pinning her to the floor.
"I, Alpha Kaelen Thorne of the Crimson Vale," Kaelen's voice echoed with ancient, brutal magic, resonating through the very earth beneath them, "do hereby reject you, Seraphina Vance, as my fated mate and Luna."
"No!" Seraphina screamed, but it was too late.
The invisible thread connecting their souls, the warm, golden bond that had hummed in the back of her mind for three years, suddenly pulled taut. And then, with the force of a physical blade, it snapped.
An agonizing, tearing pain ripped through Seraphina’s chest. It felt as though someone had reached into her ribcage and crushed her heart with their bare hands. She screamed, a raw, guttural sound that tore her throat, collapsing over Leo’s trembling body.
"Kaelen!" Vespera laughed, a light, musical sound that cut through Seraphina’s agony. "That was incredibly decisive of you, my Alpha."
"It had to be done," Kaelen said coldly, looking down at Seraphina as she convulsed in the aftermath of the severed bond. He didn't flinch. He didn't show a single ounce of regret.
Through the blinding haze of pain, Seraphina looked up. She saw Kaelen wrap his arm around Vespera’s waist, pulling her close. She looked down at Leo, whose breathing was becoming agonizingly shallow, the silver veins creeping dangerously close to his heart.
*He called him a genetic dead end.*
The words echoed in her mind, drowning out her physical pain. The tears stopped falling. The begging died on her lips. In its place, a cold, terrifying clarity began to take root.
Kaelen looked at dying Leo and coldly refused to give his blood, declaring the boy a genetic dead end before severing the mate bond with Seraphina on the spot.
She had thought her worth was in her sacrifice. She was wrong. Her worth was in her power. And Kaelen Thorne had just made the biggest mistake of his arrogant life.
Chapter 2
The agony of a severed mate bond was not just emotional; it was a violent, physical trauma. It felt as if a vital organ had been abruptly ripped from her chest, leaving a gaping, bleeding void in its wake.
Seraphina lay on the cold stone floor of the Moon Grove, gasping for air as black spots danced in her vision. Every nerve in her body felt like it had been dipped in acid.
"Get her up," Kaelen’s voice rang out, devoid of even a shred of pity.
Rough hands grabbed Seraphina’s arms. Two of Kaelen’s elite guards had entered the grove, hauling her up to her feet. Her legs gave out instantly, but the guards kept her suspended, their grips bruising her skin.
"Leo," she choked out, her head lolling to the side. Her brother was still on the floor, his breathing ragged and shallow, the silver glow of the blight pulsing ominously beneath his pale skin. "Don't... don't touch him."
"Leave the boy for now," Kaelen commanded, adjusting the collar of his shirt as if he hadn't just shattered someone's soul. "Bring her to the Great Hall. The pack is already gathering for the Blood Moon festival. It is time they meet their true Luna, and witness the purging of the weak."
"Kaelen, please," Seraphina tried to say, but the words were a garbled mess of pain.
They dragged her out of the grove, her boots dragging through the dirt. The journey to the Great Hall was a blur of excruciating pain and humiliation. As they entered the massive, fire-lit cavern that served as the pack's gathering place, the lively chatter and music of the festival ground to a halt.
Hundreds of eyes turned to her. These were the people she had healed. The warriors whose broken bones she had mended with her salves. The mothers whose fevers she had broken with her elixirs. Now, they stared at her with a mixture of shock, pity, and growing disdain as they saw the Alpha’s furious expression.
Kaelen marched up the stone steps to the Alpha’s dais, pulling a radiant, smirking Vespera with him. The guards threw Seraphina to the base of the steps. She hit the floor hard, her palms scraping against the rough stone.
"Wolves of the Crimson Vale!" Kaelen’s voice boomed, magically amplified to reach the furthest corners of the hall. "Tonight is the Blood Moon. A night of strength. A night of perfection. For too long, we have allowed weakness to fester in our ranks under the guise of compassion!"
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. The high elders, dressed in their ceremonial robes, exchanged uneasy glances but remained silent. Kaelen’s rule was absolute, built on fear and military might.
"The Goddess paired me with a mate," Kaelen continued, pointing a condemning finger down at Seraphina. "But the Goddess tests us. She tests our resolve to do what is best for the pack. Seraphina Vance carries the bloodline of the Silver-Blight. Her brother lies dying of a genetic rot that I will not allow to pollute my lineage!"
Seraphina pushed herself up onto her hands and knees, her head spinning. "You're a liar," she spat, though her voice was weak. "The Blight isn't genetic. It's a curse... a curse you provoked when you attacked the border covens!"
"Silence her!" Kaelen roared. One of the guards kicked her sharply in the ribs, sending her sprawling back to the floor with a gasp of pain.
"I have severed the fated bond," Kaelen announced, puffing his chest out as the pack gasped in collective shock. "I have chosen a mate worthy of the title of Luna. A warrior. A pureblood. Vespera Vance!"
The hall erupted into a mix of cheers and stunned murmurs. Vespera stepped forward, raising her hand like a benevolent queen. She looked down at Seraphina, her eyes glittering with malicious delight.
"My Alpha is wise," Vespera said, her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "It breaks my heart to see my cousin in such a state. But a pack is only as strong as its weakest link. And Seraphina has proven that she lacks the fortitude to lead."
Vespera slowly descended the steps, her silk gown trailing behind her. She stopped right in front of Seraphina, crouching down so only the elders in the front row could hear her clearly.
"In fact," Vespera continued, her voice raising just enough for the elders to catch every word, "I do not believe someone with such tainted blood should be trusted with the sacred duties of the Pack Alchemist. How can we trust her potions? How do we know she hasn't been poisoning us slowly to cover up her brother's weakness?"
"That is a lie!" Seraphina snarled, forcing herself up to her knees, glaring daggers at her cousin. "I have saved more lives in this pack than you ever have, Vespera! You are a parasite. You don't even know how to brew a simple healing drought!"
"I don't need to," Vespera smiled sweetly. "I am the Luna. I command, and others obey. And as my first act as Luna, I demand that Seraphina be officially stripped of her title."
The Head Elder, an old man named Corvus whose arthritis Seraphina treated weekly, stepped forward. He wouldn't meet her eyes. "The Luna speaks with the Alpha's voice," Corvus muttered. "Seraphina Vance, you are hereby stripped of your rank. You are a reject of the Crimson Vale."
The words struck like physical blows, but Seraphina gritted her teeth. She wouldn't cry. Not in front of them.
"Furthermore," Vespera’s voice turned sharp, "I demand you hand over your mother's grimoire. It belongs to the pack now. It is too valuable to be left in the hands of a reject."
Seraphina’s head snapped up, pure fury overriding the pain of the severed bond. "No. That book is my bloodline's legacy. It was my mother's, and her mother's before her. You cannot take it!"
"I am the Luna!" Vespera shrieked, dropping her sweet facade for a second. "Everything you own belongs to me!"
"You're a fake Luna," Seraphina laughed bitterly, blood staining her teeth. She looked past Vespera, locking eyes with Kaelen. Her brilliant, analytical mind was already working, pushing past the trauma. She saw the golden ribbon still faintly glowing around Kaelen’s wrist. It was fading.
"You haven't sealed the bond," Seraphina said loudly, ensuring the entire hall heard her. "A chosen soul-binding under the Blood Moon requires the Luna-binding elixir. Without it, the magic will reject Vespera. It will burn her from the inside out."
Vespera paled slightly, looking back at Kaelen.
Kaelen’s jaw tightened. "Which is why you will brew it."
Seraphina let out a dark, breathless laugh. "You strip me of my title, humiliate me, sentence my brother to death, and you expect me to brew the very potion that will cement your bond to the woman who stole my place? You are out of your mind."
"I am your Alpha," Kaelen growled, stepping down from the dais, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over her.
"Not anymore," Seraphina spat. "You rejected me. I owe you nothing. Brew it yourself, Kaelen. Oh wait, you can't. And Vespera certainly can't. The recipe is in my mother's grimoire, encrypted in a cipher only I can read. Without me, your precious Luna will be a pile of ash by sunrise."
The crowd murmured anxiously. Vespera grabbed Kaelen’s arm, her eyes wide with panic. "Make her do it, Kaelen!"
Kaelen stared down at Seraphina, his eyes cold and calculating. He knew she was telling the truth. The binding elixir was a complex, highly volatile alchemical masterpiece. Only a master could brew it, and Seraphina was the only master in the territory.
"You are very brave for someone whose brother is currently bleeding silver onto my sanctuary floor," Kaelen said softly, his voice a lethal purr.
Seraphina’s heart stopped. "Leave Leo out of this."
"He is already in it," Kaelen countered, a cruel smile touching his lips. "You love that defective boy more than your own life. That is your weakness, Seraphina. And I always exploit weakness."
Kaelen signaled to the guards. "Go to the Moon Grove. Drag the boy out to the edge of the territory."
"No!" Seraphina lunged forward, but the guards beside her slammed her back down, pinning her arms. "Don't touch him! He'll die out there!"
"The feral lands are unforgiving," Kaelen mused, pacing around her. "Full of rogue wolves, shadow-beasts, and the bitter cold. A healthy wolf wouldn't survive the night. A boy drowning in Silver-Blight? He'll be ripped apart before the moon reaches its peak."
"Kaelen, I swear to the Goddess, if you hurt him—"
"I am not hurting him," Kaelen interrupted smoothly. "You are. His fate is entirely in your hands, reject."
Kaelen crouched down, gripping Seraphina’s chin so tightly she felt her jaw might snap. He forced her to look into his icy blue eyes.
"Here is my ultimatum," Kaelen whispered, though the silence in the hall made his words ring out like gunshots. "You will go back to your laboratory. You will take your mother's grimoire, and you will brew the Luna-binding elixir. You have three hours until the moon reaches its zenith."
Seraphina trembled, tears of absolute hatred welling in her eyes.
"If the elixir is perfect," Kaelen continued, "I will allow you to take your brother and leave my lands in peace. You will be exiled, but you will be alive. If you refuse, or if you attempt to sabotage the brew..." Kaelen’s smile widened into something monstrous. "My guards will throw Leo into the feral lands tonight, and I will make you watch as the beasts tear him limb from limb."
Seraphina stared at the man she had once believed was her destiny. There was no love left. There was no warmth. There was only a cold, calculating tyrant who viewed her and her family as disposable pawns.
"Do we have an understanding, Alchemist?" Kaelen asked, releasing her chin and standing up, dusting off his hands as if she had soiled them.
Seraphina looked at Vespera’s smug face, at the cowardly elders, and finally at Kaelen. Her mind raced. Three hours. She had three hours in her laboratory, surrounded by her ingredients, her tools, and her poisons.
They thought she was just a potion-maker. They thought she was weak.
"I understand," Seraphina whispered, bowing her head to hide the dangerous, vindictive fire that had just ignited in her eyes. "I will brew your elixir."
Kaelen issues an ultimatum: Seraphina must brew their Luna-binding elixir, or Leo will be thrown out of the pack territory to die in the feral lands tonight.
Chapter 3
The heavy iron door of the laboratory slammed shut, the locking mechanism echoing with a grim, metallic finality.
Seraphina stood in the center of the stone-walled sanctuary that had been her domain for the past six years. The scent of dried wolfsbane, crushed amethyst, and simmering moon-lily usually brought her peace. Tonight, the aromas choked her.
"Don't just stand there looking pathetic," Vespera’s voice sliced through the gloom.
Seraphina turned slowly. Her cousin was lounging on the edge of the central obsidian workbench, her perfectly manicured fingers tracing the rim of a crystal vial. Vespera wore a silk gown the color of fresh blood—a gift from Kaelen, no doubt. Around her neck rested a silver chain holding the Crimson Vale's sacred Moonstone, a glowing, fist-sized gem that pulsed with the ancient magic of the pack. It was required for the binding elixir, meant to be steeped in the brew to seal the Luna's power.
"We only have three hours, Seraphina," Vespera drawled, her lips curving into a wicked, triumphant smile. "And Kaelen is very eager to complete our soul-binding. I suggest you get to work."
"You have what you wanted, Vespera," Seraphina said, her voice eerily calm as she walked toward the ingredient shelves. "You have the Alpha. You have the title. Why do you need to stand here and gloat?"
"Because it isn't enough to simply take it," Vespera replied, hopping down from the bench. She paced behind Seraphina, her heels clicking rhythmically against the flagstones. "I want to watch you brew the very thing that cements my victory. I want to see you pour your precious magic into my future. You always thought you were so superior, didn't you? With your rare alchemical talents and your mother's legacy. But look at you now. A rejected slave, brewing a potion for the cousin who took her mate."
Seraphina grabbed a bundle of dried nightshade, her knuckles turning white. *A slave.* That was exactly what she had been to this pack. Her brilliance, her late nights, her sacrifices—all of it consumed by Kaelen to strengthen his warriors, only to be discarded the moment her brother showed a hint of genetic weakness.
"I never thought I was superior," Seraphina replied, tossing the nightshade into a brass mortar. "I just thought I was valued. A foolish mistake."
"A fatal one," Vespera corrected, leaning against the wooden pillar near the hearth. "Leo is a burden. Kaelen is building an elite bloodline, Seraphina. Flawless. Powerful. He couldn't have a Luna whose brother is rotting from the inside out with Silver-Blight. It's embarrassing."
"He is a nineteen-year-old boy," Seraphina snarled, whipping around to face her. "He fought for this pack. He bled for this pack!"
"And now he will die for it," Vespera sneered. "Unless you finish that elixir. So, stop stalling. The Alpha demands perfection."
Seraphina stared into Vespera’s vain, insecure eyes. Underneath the bravado, Vespera was terrified. She knew she didn't have a fraction of Seraphina's innate power. She needed this elixir to artificially bind herself to the pack's magic, or the elders would never truly accept her.
Seraphina turned back to the cauldron, a dangerous, icy calm washing over her. "Perfection. Yes. I will give you exactly what you deserve."
She struck a match and lit the burners beneath her largest copper cauldron. The blue flames roared to life. Instead of reaching for the sweet-smelling moon-lilies required for a binding elixir, Seraphina’s hand hovered over a jar of powdered ashwinder scales.
"What is that?" Vespera demanded, stepping closer, her nose wrinkling at the sulfuric smell. "That doesn't look like the binding root."
"It's a catalyst," Seraphina lied smoothly, dumping a generous measure into the mortar and grinding it fiercely with the pestle. "The Moonstone’s energy is volatile, Vespera. If I don't stabilize the base with ashwinder dust, the elixir will burn your throat to ash when you drink it. Do you want your vocal cords liquefied on your wedding night?"
Vespera took a quick step back, her hands flying to her throat. "Fine. Just... make sure it works."
"Oh, it will work," Seraphina murmured, tipping the crushed, toxic powder into the boiling water. The liquid instantly turned a violently bubbling purple before settling into a deceptive, shimmering silver.
As she worked, Seraphina pulled her mother's ancient, leather-bound grimoire from its hidden compartment beneath the desk. The pages were yellowed, filled with forbidden recipes and forgotten lore.
"Is that it?" Vespera asked, her eyes lighting up with greedy recognition. "Aunt Elara's grimoire. Kaelen said you were to hand that over to me. As the new Luna, the pack's magical artifacts belong to me."
"You can have it when I'm finished," Seraphina said, not looking up. "I need it to verify the infusion ratios."
"You're the grand Pack Alchemist," Vespera mocked. "I thought you had it all memorized."
"I am making sure it is flawless, as requested," Seraphina retorted sharply. "Unless you'd like to take over?"
Vespera huffed and crossed her arms. "Just hurry up."
Seraphina opened the grimoire, pretending to read the potion instructions. In reality, her eyes scanned the hidden map inked on the inside of the back cover. It was a map of the Deadwoods—the forbidden territory bordering the Crimson Vale. It was a place of dark magic, feral beasts, and exile. It was also the only place Kaelen’s men would not willingly follow.
*Three miles past the weeping willow at the eastern border,* Seraphina memorized the path, her heart pounding against her ribs. *Follow the dry riverbed to the obsidian archway.*
"The Moonstone," Seraphina said aloud, keeping her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "I need it now. The brew is ready for the infusion."
Vespera unclasped the heavy silver chain from her neck. She held the glowing relic out, but as Seraphina reached for it, Vespera yanked it back, her eyes narrowing.
"If you try to ruin this, Seraphina," Vespera whispered, her tone venomous, "if you try to sabotage my moment, Kaelen will tear Leo's throat out before your eyes. Do you understand me?"
"I understand," Seraphina said, locking gazes with her cousin. "I know exactly what is at stake."
Vespera smirked and dropped the Moonstone into Seraphina’s outstretched palm.
The moment the warm, pulsing stone touched her skin, Seraphina felt the ancient magic sing to her. It was the heart of the pack, the source of their strength. Kaelen didn't deserve it. Vespera certainly didn't deserve it.
Seraphina walked to the cauldron. She raised her hand over the shimmering silver liquid, holding the stone between her thumb and forefinger. Vespera leaned in, her eyes wide with anticipation, waiting for the magical reaction.
With a swift, practiced sleight of hand she had perfected over years of complex alchemy, Seraphina dropped a polished river stone into the bubbling cauldron. In the same fluid motion, she slipped the sacred Moonstone into the deep leather pouch at her belt.
The potion hissed, a cloud of sparkling white steam rising into the air as the river stone hit the boiling liquid.
"Beautiful," Vespera breathed, entirely fooled by the alchemical theatricality. "How long until it's ready to drink?"
"It needs to cool for ten minutes," Seraphina said, stepping back from the cauldron and wiping her hands on her apron. She moved toward the corner cot where Leo lay unconscious, his breathing shallow, his skin marred by the creeping black veins of the Silver-Blight.
"Ten minutes," Vespera repeated, checking her reflection in the glass of a cabinet door. "Good. Kaelen is waiting."
Seraphina knelt beside her brother. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, corked vial of smelling salts, waving it gently beneath his nose. Leo stirred, letting out a weak, rattling cough. His glazed eyes fluttered open, struggling to focus on her face.
"Sera?" he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "What's happening?"
"Shh," Seraphina whispered back, brushing a sweaty lock of hair from his forehead. "I'm right here."
Vespera turned, a look of utter disgust on her face. "Ugh. Make sure you drag him out of here before Kaelen and I return for the chalice. I don't want his stench ruining the atmosphere."
Seraphina didn't look at her. She stood up, walking back to the workbench. She picked up a heavy silver chalice—the ceremonial cup for the Alpha and Luna. With a ladle, she scooped the shimmering, toxic liquid from the cauldron and poured it into the goblet.
"There," Seraphina said, her voice dropping to a deadly, quiet register. "The drought is complete."
"It's about time," Vespera snapped, stepping forward to take the chalice.
"Don't touch it yet!" Seraphina commanded sharply, forcing Vespera to freeze. "I told you, it needs to cool. If you drink it while the magic is still volatile, it will kill you."
Vespera glared at her, but took a step back. "Fine. We will return in ten minutes. And Seraphina? Have the boy gone by then. Leave the grimoire on the table."
Vespera turned on her heel and strode out of the laboratory, the heavy iron door slamming shut behind her. The lock clicked. They had locked her in, assuming she was trapped until they returned.
They had severely underestimated the Pack Alchemist.
Seraphina moved with lightning speed. She grabbed her leather rucksack, shoving the grimoire inside. She swept her arms across the shelves, packing vials of healing salves, explosive powders, and rare herbs.
She walked over to the chalice. The paralyzing drought shimmered beautifully. When Kaelen and Vespera drank it, they wouldn't die—Seraphina wasn't foolish enough to invite the wrath of the entire werewolf council by assassinating an Alpha—but they would be completely paralyzed, trapped in their own bodies, unable to speak or shift for at least twelve hours. By the time they recovered, she would be long gone.
"Sera..." Leo groaned, trying to push himself up on his elbows. "Where... where are we going?"
Seraphina slung the heavy rucksack over her shoulders and knelt beside him. She patted the leather pouch at her waist, feeling the comforting, powerful thrum of the stolen Moonstone against her hip.
She looked into her brother's terrified, feverish eyes, her own burning with a fierce, protective fire.
"We're leaving the Crimson Vale, Leo," she whispered, pulling his arm over her shoulder and hoisting him up. "It's time to run."
