Taste of Ruin

Chapter 6: Dinner with the Enemy

The scent of rosemary, garlic, and seared duck fat filled the apartment, masking the suffocating tension that hung in the air.

Clara stood at the stove, her chef’s knife moving in a rapid, rhythmic blur as she julienned carrots with mechanical precision. Cooking had always been her sanctuary, a place where chaotic ingredients were forced into perfect harmony. But tonight, there was no harmony. Tonight, she was preparing a slaughter.

She was wearing a backless, deep crimson dress that hugged her curves flawlessly—a dress Simon had bought for her a year ago but always complained was "too distracting" for her to wear in public. The silk slit up the thigh gave her freedom of movement in the kitchen, but left very little to the imagination.

"Babe, you look incredible," Simon called from the living room, adjusting the collar of his navy blazer in the hall mirror. "But are you sure you want to cook in that? You’re going to get grease on it."

"I rarely make mistakes in the kitchen, Simon," Clara said, sliding the carrots into a hot sauté pan. The oil hissed viciously. "You should know that by now."

Before Simon could respond, the doorbell chimed.

Clara’s hand tightened around the handle of her pan. Showtime.

"I'll get it!" Simon jogged to the door, his face splitting into a wide, welcoming grin as he pulled it open. "Elise! Victor! Come in, come in."

"Simon, darling!" Elise’s voice drifted down the hallway, sickeningly sweet and dripping with false affection.

Clara turned off the burner, wiped her hands on a towel, and walked out of the kitchen just in time to see Elise leaning in to kiss Simon on the cheek. Elise lingered for a fraction of a second too long, her hand resting on Simon’s chest. It was a subtle, proprietary touch, one that Clara would have completely missed just two days ago. Now, it looked like a flashing neon sign.

"Clara!" Elise chirped, pulling away from Simon and rushing forward. She looked immaculate in a white designer dress, her blonde hair perfectly blown out. "Oh, you look... wow. That’s certainly a bold choice for a Tuesday night dinner."

"I felt like dressing up for family," Clara said, allowing Elise to air-kiss both of her cheeks. Elise smelled of expensive jasmine perfume—the same scent that had lingered in Room 414. It made Clara want to gag.

"And it smells divine in here," Elise added, tossing her designer coat to Simon without looking at him. "You’re always slaving away, Clara. You really need to take a break."

"I enjoy the work," Clara replied smoothly.

Then, she looked past her stepsister.

Victor Sterling stood in the entryway, a towering monolith of dark, tailored perfection. He wore a charcoal suit without a tie, the top two buttons of his shirt undone, radiating a ruthless, effortless power that made the entire room feel instantly smaller. His piercing, icy eyes locked onto Clara, sweeping over her crimson dress.

For a terrifying second, the stoic mask slipped, and Clara saw raw, unadulterated hunger flash in his gaze.

"Clara," Victor said, his deep voice vibrating through the floorboards. "A pleasure, as always."

"Victor," Clara nodded, forcing herself to breathe normally. "Thank you for coming."

"I wouldn't miss it," Victor replied, stepping into the living room. "Simon tells me we have business to discuss. And I am always interested in... lucrative ventures."

He held Clara's gaze on the last two words, the double meaning hanging heavy in the air between them.

"Drinks!" Simon announced loudly, clapping his hands together. "Let’s get some wine poured. I have a fantastic Bordeaux that I’ve been saving for a special occasion."

They moved to the dining table. Clara had set it meticulously, the crystal glasses gleaming under the modern chandelier. By unspoken agreement, or perhaps by Victor’s silent, commanding maneuvering, the seating arrangement fell into place: Simon sat at the head of the table, Elise to his left, and Clara to his right.

Victor took the seat directly next to Clara.

As Simon poured the wine, playing the exuberant host, Victor casually draped his arm over the back of Clara’s chair. To anyone else, it looked like a relaxed posture. But Clara could feel the heat radiating from him, the subtle brush of his knuckles against her bare shoulder blade.

"To family," Simon toasted, raising his glass. "And to the future of the restaurant."

"To the future," Elise echoed, shooting Simon a secret, lingering smile over the rim of her glass.

Clara clinked her glass against Victor’s. "To getting exactly what we deserve."

Victor’s lips curled into a dangerous smirk. "I'll drink to that."

Dinner commenced, a masterclass in psychological warfare. Clara served the duck, flawlessly seared and glazed, while Simon dominated the conversation with empty business jargon.

"The thing is, Victor," Simon said, gesturing with his fork, "Clara is a genius in the kitchen, no one denies that. But she lacks the big-picture vision. If we secure this Michelin star, we need to strike while the iron is hot. Franchising. Merchandising. I was hoping to discuss the venture capital side of things with you. Your firm could provide the bridge loan we need to restructure."

Victor slowly cut a piece of duck, his demeanor terrifyingly calm. "My firm doesn't do bridge loans, Simon. We do takeovers. I only invest in things I have absolute control over. I don't share."

Elise laughed, a high, tinkling sound. "Oh, Victor is terribly possessive, Simon. Once he claims something, he locks it down completely."

"Is that so?" Simon asked, leaning forward, utterly oblivious to the tension radiating from the billionaire. "Well, in business, sometimes you have to know when to let the experts take the reins. Clara’s too attached to the day-to-day. She needs someone like me to handle the assets."

Underneath the table, Victor’s large hand slid off his own knee and drifted across the space between them.

Clara gasped quietly as Victor’s palm settled firmly onto her bare thigh, right at the edge of the high slit of her dress. His touch was scorching.

"Are you alright, Clara?" Simon asked, pausing his pitch. "You sounded like you choked."

"I'm fine," Clara choked out, her face flushing crimson. "The glaze just has a bit of a kick to it. Spicy."

"I find it perfect," Victor murmured, his thumb tracing slow, deliberate circles on Clara’s inner thigh. He didn't even look at her; his eyes remained fixed on Simon. "Tell me, Simon. When you manage these... assets... do you find it difficult to keep your hands out of the cookie jar? So to speak."

Simon’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "I'm not sure I follow, Victor."

"Loyalty," Victor said smoothly, his hand sliding an inch higher up Clara’s thigh. Clara bit the inside of her cheek so hard she tasted copper. "In my experience, men who are eager to restructure other people's hard work often have a problem with loyalty. They get greedy. They take things that don't belong to them."

"Well," Simon cleared his throat, tugging at his collar. "I assure you, my loyalty to this restaurant—and to Clara—is absolute."

Elise shifted uncomfortably in her seat. "Let's not talk about boring finances all night. Simon, I brought the mockups for the PR campaign. I think we should lean into the 'power couple' angle for you and Clara. The media loves a romantic partnership behind a successful brand."

"That's a great idea," Simon agreed instantly, his eyes meeting Elise's. The raw, heavy lust passing between them was so obvious Clara wondered how she had ever been blind to it.

Victor’s fingers slipped slightly higher, dangerously close to Clara’s center. She squeezed her eyes shut for a millisecond, her breathing growing shallow. She had to break the tension before she shattered completely.

"I think the power couple angle is a lie," Clara stated loudly, her voice cutting through the dining room.

Simon frowned. "Clara, don't be difficult. Elise is the expert here."

"I'm just saying," Clara continued, forcing her eyes open and staring directly at Elise. "The public can spot a fake. If there's rot beneath the surface, if the foundation is built on lies, it eventually collapses. I'd rather the PR focus on the food. The food is honest."

Elise’s perfectly glossed lips thinned into a hard line. She reached for her wine glass, her hand suddenly jerky. Her fingers collided with the crystal stem, sending the glass toppling over.

Dark red wine spilled across the white linen tablecloth, splashing violently onto Simon’s lap.

"Dammit!" Simon yelled, leaping out of his chair as the wine soaked into his trousers.

"Oh my god! Simon, I am so sorry!" Elise gasped, jumping up, her hands fluttering in exaggerated panic. "I'm so clumsy! Do you have club soda? We need to treat that immediately before it sets."

"In the laundry room," Simon gritted out, grabbing a napkin and dabbing at his crotch.

"Let me help you," Elise insisted, her eyes wide and apologetic. She grabbed Simon’s arm, pulling him away from the table. "I know exactly how to get wine stains out. Clara, Victor, excuse us for just one moment!"

They hurried down the hallway, disappearing around the corner toward the back of the apartment.

The moment they were out of sight, Victor’s hand clamped down hard on Clara’s thigh. He leaned in, his mouth hovering mere inches from her ear.

"You're playing with fire, Clara," Victor whispered, his breath hot against her skin. "Provoking them at the table."

"I can handle it," Clara breathed back, turning her head so their lips were agonizingly close. "I want them to squirm."

"They aren't squirming," Victor said, his voice dropping to a lethal, gravelly pitch. "They're plotting. Come on."

He stood up silently, grabbing Clara’s hand and pulling her out of her chair. They moved silently down the hallway, the thick Persian rug muffling their footsteps. The laundry room was tucked away at the very end of the hall, just past the guest bathroom. The door was cracked open, a sliver of yellow light spilling out onto the hardwood floor.

Clara and Victor pressed themselves against the wall, perfectly hidden in the shadows of the corridor.

From inside the laundry room, the sound of running water masked the rustle of clothing.

"God, I missed you today," Simon’s voice drifted out, stripped of all its polished, public charm. It sounded guttural, desperate.

"Be careful," Elise hissed back, though she didn't sound angry. She sounded breathless. "She’s right out there."

"I don't care," Simon groaned. "She's been a nightmare all day. Parading around in that dress, trying to act like she runs the show. I can't wait until we have the holding company set up and I can finally phase her out of the kitchen."

"Just a few more weeks," Elise purred. There was a wet, smacking sound—a heavy kiss. "Once the venture capital clears from Victor's accounts, we'll have enough to buy her out completely. Then it'll just be us."

Clara felt the floor drop out from beneath her. It wasn't just the restaurant. They were stealing from Victor’s firm, too.

Victor’s entire body went rigid against hers. The temperature in the hallway seemed to plummet twenty degrees. Clara looked up at his face in the dim light. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked violently beneath the skin. The stoic billionaire was gone; in his place was a predator staring at its trapped prey.

Inside the room, a zipper rasped loudly. Simon let out a low sigh.

Victor didn't wait for Clara’s signal. He stepped away from the wall, his heavy footsteps suddenly loud and deliberate on the hardwood floor.

Clara’s heart stopped.

Victor strode right up to the cracked door of the laundry room and pushed it open with the flat of his hand.

"Darling," Victor said, his voice entirely smooth, an iceberg hiding a thousand jagged blades beneath the surface. "Did you manage to find the club soda?"

The sound of the shower running down the hall was a dull, constant roar, but to Clara, it sounded like a ticking clock.

She stood in the hallway of the townhouse she shared with Simon, her heart hammering against her ribs with frantic, desperate force. It was 8:32 AM.
