Chapter 6

Ruthless Vengeance: His Broken Secret

Chapter 6: The Viper's Nest

"Staring at the garbage won't make it clean itself, Silas."

Silas didn't flinch, though his grip on the blood-stained napkin tightened, crumpling it into a tight ball in his fist. He slowly stood up, turning to face the doorway where Evelyn Cross stood, leaning elegantly against the frame.

She wore a sleek, backless crimson dress that clung to her curves, her dark hair pinned up in a flawless twist. Evelyn was his fixer, his public companion, and the sharpest weapon in his arsenal. She was beautiful, calculating, and completely devoid of the messy emotions that Silas currently found himself drowning in.

"What do you want, Evelyn?" Silas asked, his voice flat, betraying none of the turmoil churning in his gut. He casually slipped his fist into his pocket, hiding the bloody napkin from her sharp eyes.

"The guests for the private game are arriving in the basement lounge," Evelyn said, her heels clicking softly against the hardwood as she stepped into the bedroom. Her sharp eyes swept over the abandoned cleaning bucket, then flicked to Silas's face. "You're supposed to be down there. Moretti is already complaining about the scotch."

"Let him complain," Silas muttered, walking past her toward the en-suite bathroom to wash his hands. "He's here to lose his money, not critique my liquor."

Evelyn followed him, leaning against the bathroom doorframe as he turned on the gold faucet. "You're distracted," she noted, her voice carrying a dangerous, velvety edge. "And I know why."

"I doubt that," Silas replied, keeping his eyes on the water spiraling down the drain.

"It's the new maid," Evelyn said, the word *maid* thick with manufactured disdain. "Clara, was it? The one who broke your heart and ran off with a millionaire before you built your empire."

Silas shut the water off sharply. "Mind your business, Evelyn."

"My business is protecting your empire," Evelyn countered, stepping closer. "And right now, you are letting a ghost from your past cloud your judgment. I saw her in the hallway, Silas. She looks like a drowned rat. She's playing the victim, and you're falling for it."

Silas turned, wiping his hands on a towel, his jaw locked. "I am not falling for anything. She owes me a debt, and she’s going to work it off. That’s all."

"Is it?" Evelyn smiled, a cold, thin line. "Because you just spent the last twenty minutes locked in a room with her, and now you look like you've seen a murder. She’s manipulating you. She knows you still have a soft spot for the girl you thought she was."

"I don't have a soft spot for anyone," Silas snarled, throwing the towel onto the counter. He closed the distance between them, towering over Evelyn, his eyes dark and threatening. "She means absolutely nothing to me. She is property. She is a stain on my floor that I am forcing to scrub herself clean."

"Then prove it," Evelyn challenged, her chin tilting up, completely unafraid of his anger. "The boys in the back room are animals tonight. They need someone to serve drinks. Send her."

Silas stiffened. The underground poker game was restricted for a reason. The men who attended were cartel bosses, syndicate leaders, and ruthless killers. They were not polite. They were not kind to the staff.

"She's a cleaner," Silas said dismissively. "Not a waitress. She'll drop the tray."

"So fire her if she does," Evelyn pressed, her eyes glinting with a manipulative triumph. "Unless, of course, you're afraid they might look at her too closely? Afraid one of them might hurt your precious little maid?"

Silas’s pride flared, a toxic, burning sensation in his chest. He thought of the bloody napkin in his pocket. He thought of Clara screaming at him, defying him, hiding her secrets. If she wanted to play games, if she wanted to refuse his help and act like a defiant martyr, then she could face the wolves.

"Fine," Silas said coldly, brushing past Evelyn toward the door. "Tell Marcus to pull her from the cleaning rotation. Put her in the lounge. She serves the table tonight."

Evelyn's smile widened. "I'll make sure she looks presentable."

"No," Silas barked, stopping in his tracks. He didn't know why, but the thought of Evelyn forcing Clara into one of the casino's revealing waitress uniforms made his blood run cold. He thought of her terrified grip on her collar. "She wears her standard uniform. Don't touch her."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow but nodded. "As you wish, Boss."

An hour later, the basement VIP lounge was thick with cigar smoke and the heavy scent of expensive bourbon. Silas sat at the head of the circular poker table, carelessly tossing a stack of black chips onto the green felt. Around him sat three of the city’s most dangerous men, laughing and cursing in equal measure.

Silas wasn't paying attention to his cards. His eyes were locked on the heavy oak doors at the far end of the room.

When the doors finally pushed open, Clara walked in.

She looked small. The oversized, stiff black uniform swallowed her slight frame. She carried a heavy silver tray laden with crystal glasses and decanters of liquor. Her face was a mask of pale, impenetrable stone, her eyes fixed firmly on the floor.

"Ah, finally," Moretti, a heavy-set cartel boss with a jagged scar across his cheek, grunted. "My glass has been empty for ten minutes. Bring it here, sweetheart."

Clara didn't speak. She walked toward the table, her steps slow and deliberate.

Silas watched her intently. He was looking for a limp. He was looking for a wince. He was looking for any sign of the bleeding wound he knew she was hiding beneath that thick cotton shirt. But Clara moved with a rigid, unnatural stiffness, as if she were holding her breath with every step.

"Pour," Moretti ordered, tapping his empty glass.

Clara stepped up beside him. She reached out with the heavy crystal decanter. Her hand was trembling violently. The glass clinked loudly against the rim of Moretti’s cup as she poured, spilling a few drops onto the green felt.

"Careful, bitch," Moretti snapped, slapping his hand down on the table.

Clara flinched so hard she nearly dropped the decanter. She stumbled backward, bumping into the chair of the man sitting next to Moretti.

The man turned around, a scowl on his face. He was younger than Moretti, with slicked-back hair and cold, dead eyes. He ran a prominent underground fighting ring on the east side of the city.

"Watch where you're stepping," the man snarled, reaching out and grabbing Clara roughly by the wrist to steady his chair.

"I'm sorry," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible. She tried to pull her wrist away, her eyes widening in panic. "I'm sorry, let me go."

The man didn't let go. Instead, his scowl slowly faded, replaced by a look of profound, chilling recognition. He pulled her wrist closer, forcing Clara to stumble forward into the light hanging over the poker table.

He stared at her face, examining the hollows of her cheeks, the frightened dart of her eyes, the rigid way she held her shoulders.

Silas sat up straighter, the casual arrogance dropping from his posture. Every muscle in his body tensed. "Let go of my staff, Vargas," Silas warned, his voice low and dangerous.

Vargas ignored him. A slow, cruel smile stretched across his face, revealing a row of crooked teeth.

"I know this face," Vargas said softly, his grip tightening on Clara’s wrist as she began to struggle in earnest, her breathing turning shallow and erratic.

"I said, let her go," Silas repeated, pushing his chair back and standing up, the legs scraping loudly against the floor.

Vargas let out a dark, rumbling laugh, finally releasing Clara's wrist only to reach out and mockingly tilt her chin up. Clara froze, completely paralyzed by a terror so absolute it seemed to rob her of the ability to breathe.

"Well, well, well," Vargas sneered, his eyes locking onto Clara's terrified face. "I'll be damned. If it isn't Inmate 402. The Warden's little Canary."
