Chapter 6

Alpha's True Mate

Chapter 6: The Unwelcome Encounter

The neutral trading post at Sector Four was a bustling nexus of low-level pack merchants, brokers, and couriers, making it the ideal spot to acquire encrypted communications hardware without drawing the watchful eyes of the Ironfang or Blackthorn scouts. Dressed in a nondescript wool coat with the collar turned up against the crisp afternoon chill, I moved quietly among the crowded stalls. My mind was entirely focused on the digital ledger I was decrypting on my handheld tablet—tracing the movement of funds from Ethan’s personal accounts to Vivienne’s secondary holdings.

"Elena."

The voice cut through the ambient chatter like a rusted blade.

I paused, turning slightly to find Ethan Cross stepping out from the shadow of a heavy canvas awning. His expression was a fractured mask of forced bravado and simmering panic. Clearly, the whispers of administrative audits within the higher ranks were beginning to reach his ears, and the reality of his precarious position was starting to prick his armor of arrogance.

"We need to talk," Ethan muttered, closing the distance between us with an aggressive, predatory stride meant to intimidate. He grabbed my forearm, his fingers digging in with unnecessary force. "You need to understand how this works. You running crying to older wolves—bringing weird, intimidating old men into hotel rooms—won't change your station."

I didn't flinch. I didn't pull away with a gasp, nor did I feel the hollow, aching throb in my chest that the mate bond used to trigger. I simply looked down at his hand gripping my wrist, then raised my eyes to meet his.

My gaze was completely flat, devoid of anger, fear, or heartbreak. It was the look a surgeon gives a specimen under a microscope.

"Let go of me, Ethan," I said, my voice quiet, even, and thoroughly chilling.

Ethan’s grip faltered slightly, thrown off by my absolute lack of emotional compliance. He was a man who relied entirely on the pathetic validation of controlling others; take away a woman's tears or terror, and he was left standing in the vacuum of his own profound emptiness.

"You think you're clever, don't you?" Ethan sneered, leaning in close, his breath sour with manufactured confidence. "You're a wolfless nobody. If you breathe a word about what happened at the Ironfang estate—if you try to interfere with my social standing or my alignment with Vivienne—I will make sure every pack from here to the northern border blacklists you. You won't even be able to buy a loaf of bread, let alone survive."

I tilted my head, studying him with clinical detachment. The sheer irony of his threats—delivered to someone whose bloodline predated the very council papers he had forged—was almost comical.

"You're barking at ghosts, Ethan," I replied softly, my tone as cold as winter frost. "And your lease on this territory is expiring much faster than you realize."

His face flushed with sudden rage, his wolf instincts flaring in a desperate bid to assert dominance. He raised his free hand, his fingers curling into a threatening gesture. "You ungrateful little bitch—"

Before the words had even finished leaving his mouth, the atmosphere in the alleyway violently shifted.

The air grew heavy, dropping ten degrees in a single heartbeat. A low, resonant growl—not human, but the primal warning of an apex Alpha—vibrated through the stone pavement and rattled the metal stalls nearby.

Ethan froze, every drop of color draining from his face as his body instinctively registered absolute, overwhelming dominance.

Stepping out from beneath a vaulted stone archway just ten feet away, Alpha Damien Blackthorn emerged into the light. His dark eyes were fixed entirely on Ethan, burning with a wrath so cold and absolute that it made the surrounding merchants scatter like leaves in a gale.

Damien didn't shout. He didn't need to. He walked forward with measured, devastatingly calm steps until he breached Ethan’s personal space, towering over him by half a foot.

Ethan’s knees buckled slightly, his hand instantly releasing my wrist as he cowered beneath the suffocating weight of Damien's aura.

"Step away from her," Damien murmured, his voice a lethal, low purr that promised total destruction.
